A health condition for which exposure to an adverse childhood experience is recognized as a contributing factor and that affects an individual's physical, mental, emotional, behavioral, or social well-being. Adverse childhood experiences are significant events or stressors occurring during the childhood period. Examples include abuse, neglect, growing up in a household where there are mental health or substance abuse problems or separation from a primary caregiver.
